News: Gravity Switch helps build a house with Habitat for Humanity

08/03/2009

Every summer we share a day-long outing as a company (visiting Mystic Aquarium, going spelunking, exploring Mike's Maze to name a few), and this year was no different. Except this year's outing was very close to home, and involved some heavy lifting and hard work. A few of us had done this sort of thing before, and for a few of us it was a brand new experience. For me (one of the latter category) it was great, exhausting fun, and at the end of the day I felt like I had truly done a good day's work.

Habitat for Humanity is building a set of houses in Florence: one two family and a couple of single families. The land was donated, and the energy efficient houses will be sold at cost, with zero-interest mortgages. The families are already chosen, and the first house (the one we worked on) is scheduled to be completed next year.

Most of the day was spent hammering nails and hauling brush from the back yard, but the highlight was raising a collection of 10 or 15 of the triangular wooden framework pieces from the ground to the two story roof so they could later be erected. That's something we all got to work together on--I guess it proved we do pretty darn well as a team...

Maybe we'll get to do it again next year. Maybe you'll join us!
