People keep telling me they're thinking of doing more Social Media. It's now 2011 and Social Media certainly isn't new anymore, so here's my challenge to you:
In the next 4 weeks, either dedicate the time and resources to doing Social Media, or just stop wasting time thinking about it altogether.
If you need help holding yourself accountable, just send me an email and let me know that you're actually going to do this. I'll follow up with you once a week for 4 weeks and make sure that you're actually doing it. I'm happy to help!
Tips to get started
- Make sure that you find value in Social Media personally, before trying to apply it to work.
- Attend one of Derek's upcoming workshops.
- Ask a local college for an intern to help you. There's no shame in having someone who has more experience paint your house, so why shouldn't you ask someone with more experience than you to help you with Social Media?
- Think about campaigns. Social Media was called Viral Marketing in the 90's and guerilla marketing in the 70's, but it all comes down to the fact that if you have something exciting that people really want to hear, people will be happy to help you get the word out, but it has to be genuine. When we work with clients on Social Media projects, our focus is on building a campaign around a genuine message and setting up the campaign infrastructure to magnify the reach with that message.
- Bonus Tidbit - Be realistic about Twitter.
Speaking of a successful Social Media campaign, we wanted to thank all the sponsors and participants of the Western Mass Business Makeover. You spread the word and over 12,000 votes were cast and we gave away over $50,000 in prizes to deserving local businesses and non-profits.
