News: Looking Forward, Hiring Backwards

08/31/2009

Traditionally we've had a number of larger projects going on, with a few smaller "maintenance" projects at any given time.  Right now we are up to our ears in smaller maintenance projects, and this is a new thing for us. It's enlightening to see our team here at Gravity Switch bending with the wind. We've adjusted how we approach projects. We've taken on different types of work, and made them work for us (and our clients). We've brainstormed, innovated, questioned, and persevered.

Now we're trying something new to support the workload--hiring "backwards" if you will. Instead of taking on a new employee, spending lots of time showing them the ropes, holding their hand, lifting them back up when they fall, and keeping a watchful eye for months on end to the detriment of our other responsibilities, we're turning that around and letting our new employee do the work. Makes sense in a way, doesn't it?

Don't get me wrong, Gravity Switch is one of the most supportive teams I've ever had the pleasure to be a part of. But many of us who have come to call this place home started out part time, temp-hire, or solely as admins. Many of us took that, ran with it, jumped into the fire and--without putting a huge strain on already busy resources--found bigger and better work for ourselves, took on new responsibilities, and lightened the load for others.

So here's our idea: Hire somebody with a little management and "people" experience and lots of drive. The contract will be for one month's time, and we'll start small, handing off smaller office tasks and training them only on relevant tools for what they are doing right now. At the end of the month, the contract is over. So then it becomes their responsibility (your responsibility?) to take the ball and run with it. Wow us with your dedication and persistence, and you may just find yourself sticking around.
