I hosted a mini "think tank" at my office yesterday with a handful of smart people who have all started their own businesses. We talked about the reasons people don't follow through on things and came up with the following list:
Don't know where to start
Strategy isn't straight in your mind. (we were all business owners, so the answer to this was easy: stop thinking about thinking about it and spend a few hours with a whiteboard to figure out an approach)Don't have the resources
Can't sell to the market is just not having the right sales person, or not having the money to hire the right salesperson.Don't have the connections
Over-thinking
It's a worse idea than other things we're working on, and we've prioritized it away
We talked about the idea of focus, but then agreed we wouldn't have gotten to where we are today if we didn't have the ability to set priorities. (this is actually a good problem to have!)
I thought these were some interesting thoughts to share. Personally I find that connections and resources feel like my biggest stumbling blocks.
What are yours?
