Some Thoughts on Coming Up Well on Google

09/30/2008

Everyone wants to be thin, rich, and have their website come up on the first page of Google - overnight and with minimal effort.

Why is Search Engine Optimization So Hard?

Google SearchImagine you are a retail business marketing running shoes. Your goal is to come up at the top of the heap when potential customers type in the word "sneakers." It sounds like a logical and attainable goal. But step back for a moment and consider that there are over 27,000,000 websites vying for that same term. Yes, 27 million results.  Coming up in even the top 100 results now seems like a challenge. And rightly so.

It's Real Exercise

"Getting thin" has its exercise plans and its coaches, its expert liposuction surgeons and its "magic" diet pills. So does optimization:

  • Like getting healthy, Search Engine Optimization is hard work. It takes time and dedication.
  • There is no legitimate "get thin quick" pill, just like there is no "improve your Google ranking for $30/month."
  • In both cases you have to find an approach that works for you and is true to you - and stick with it.
  • Set realistic targets. It's not likely you'll go from 350lbs to 100lbs in a month, and it's not likely you'll go from site number 27 million to site number 1 overnight.
  • Make sure whatever you're doing works in your day-to-day life.  Find healthy foods you like instead of getting hung up on the list of foods you can't eat. Work with internal and external copywriters to better leverage your existing website content for search engines.
  • Think about working with an expert who's trained to help you set realistic targets and meet them.

The moral of the story: I think the only people getting rich quick are the ones selling diet pills!
